Hmm, posted with my Twitter email and it defaults to a place holder as my twitter email doesn't have a grav.
I used the smashingmagazine twittar one and they tend to be very reliable. Turns out twitter have removed the email lookup for avatars. Smart really but an annoying loss.
Would be nice if Smashing would update there post to mention this. Thats why I'm not a fan of big content generating blogs like smashing they fire and forget their posts.

I used a plugin. I've used my twitter email to make this comment so you should see my twavatar instead of my gravatar.

Did you use a WP plugin for the Twitter avatars or do it yourself?

Facebook lets information go only oneway: in. Its a social networking black hole, whereas Twitter has at least one outlet: RSS feeds. Using there output you can keep a record (like I am) of all the status updates you ever make. Which is where the bit in my sidebar is 'fed' from.
